Leather Furniture Repair & Restoration
Over time, leather loses its sheen and leather furniture becomes dull or develops cracks. Faded leather becomes uneven and discolored. Leather furniture repair and restoration services rejuvenate the leather and bring it back to life. Leather furniture restoration allows you to conceal scratches, clean and maintain the leather, repair the damaged portions, and restore the furniture to just the way as it used to be. There are several ways to restore your leather furniture—let’s take a quick look at them.
Use a Leather Recoloring Balm
Using leather recoloring balm is the simplest way to restore leather. The balm uses a simple wipe and buff off application and requires the leather surface to be absorbent so that it can penetrate through it. The leather recoloring balm is inexpensive, easy to use, and gives great results – but all it does is to restore the color. It doesn’t actually fix the cracks on the leather. For this, you will have to look at other methods.

Prepare the Leather for Repair and Restoration
This means removing any waxes, oils or silicones that are present on the leather. Not doing so would make the leather more adhesive. There are several other techniques that are used by leather repair and restoration services for prepping the leather, but for a DIY project, you can keep it simple by just cleaning the leather with ultra-clean and warm soapy water.
Repairing the Cracks and Worn Areas on the Furniture
Step 1: Strengthen the leather with a leather binder
The very first step is to strengthen the leather with a leather binder to prevent it from cracking in the future. The leather binder should be applied with a sponge. Apply around five coats to the leather until it is completely absorbed. This will hold the worn leather fibers together.
Step 2: If the leather is heavily cracked, apply Flexifil
Apply a small amount of Flexifil to the cracked areas of the leather with a pallet knife. Run the pallet knife over the fillings to smooth them out and to get rid of any excess. Fill all the cracks and allow the leather to dry for 30 minutes. Smooth the area down using fine sandpaper.
Step 3: Apply leather colorant
Apply leather colorant to the leather with a sponge. Work it into any creases, gaps or hard-to-reach areas on the leather. Allow it to dry.
Step 4: Spray your chosen color
After the colorant has completely dried, use a spray gun or airbrush to spray the leather with the chosen color. Don’t over-apply the color. Get some practice with using the spray gun before actually using it. Spray the colorant in thin layers on the leather. This gives it a better finish.
Step 5: Spray the finish
Apply the leather finish with a spray gun. This gives even the roughest leather a smooth feel and texture.
